Greetings from Howard, Colorado... where it's been one heck of a pleasant Winter. 
My mother passed on last month after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. I've included the obit below and a pic  from a promo shoot circa1950. 
I'm heading off to circumnavigate the Rockies this week on an apres ski fandango.
Bill Wright and I are debuting a new Country/Rock quartet, Barbed Wire, in Denver this month.

GLASTONBURY OBITUARY:

Virginia Shimp Hayes
 

Virginia "Tiny" Hayes, 83, died February 20, 2009 at Columbine Manor in Salida, Colorado. 
She was born Hester Virginia Shimp on August 4, 1925 to Byron and Besse (Good) Shimp of Pelham, New York.

Tiny began studying ballet at age 7. In her teens she was a student of famed dance teacher Steffi Nossen. She graduated Smith College in 1946 and continued to dance in Nossen's ballets. Signed by choreographer Agnes deMille, she played "Aggie" in the Broadway and touring production of "Oklahoma". 

She married Walter A. Hayes Jr. in 1954 and raised three children - Lindsay O'Bara of Keene, NH, Bruce Hayes of Howard, CO, and Douglas Hayes who passed away in 1998. Her husband passed away in 2003. They lived in Glastonbury, Connecticut from 1972 to 2001. 

Her ashes will be held in Colorado, a state that she loved to visit - She especially loved the wildflowers.

Being home has afforded me the opportunity to do sound and/or sit in with some great artists at the Salida Cafe. Thanks to Casey Driesan, Chuck Pyle, and Shannon Whitworth for letting me jump in on Mandolin recently...Oh yes, and Trout Fishing in America at the T'bird!

Greetings from Howard, Colorado... Last minute announcement! The guy that was traveling cross country to play at the Salida Cafe tomorrow night (Friday) had to cancel because he can't buy any GAS as a result of IKE, So I'm going to fill in and be glad I'm not on tour somewhere with no gas. We'LL call it the HAPPY WE R HOME SHOW.

Greetings from Howard, Colorado... I got my 2 bucks worth while writing this newsletter. Them 2 bucks were outstanding in their field, munching grass, big, furry, antlers shining in the sun...BTW (I know, I hate it when folks do that too), harkening back to last Winter's wildlife observations, Antelopes 'round these parts are called Pronghorns, and they aren't Antelopes, they are a unique species only found in North America. They are however, the fastest animal on land, reaching speeds of 80 mph and capable of sustained speeds of 30 mph over rough terrain for many miles. In a sprint, a Cheetah would win, but after a quarter mile he'd be eating Pronghorn dust. Speaking of eating dust, here are my travel plans:

Ski season ended in Telluride with a bang Sunday as an early incarnation of the Bruce Hayes Band (Jim Belcher & Dave Sachs of Durango) took the stage at Gorrano Lodge and then again that night at the Sheridan for the Ski Patrol Party. Exhausting, but exhilarating to play with with those guys again.
I'll be soaking up what's left of lift time at Crested Butte and Monarch ski areas this week.
Next week is the big debut at Swallow Hill in Denver! See you there!

Greetings from Howard, Colorado, where it's a good idea to shovel your roof... and the snow keeps coming. I saw an Antelope being chased by a coyote across the back 40. It was like the Discovery channel in my own back yard. I opened the door and yelled "Hey over here" and the little feller turned right for me and ran over to our yard. The coyote had a look of resentment as he skulled off.
Meanwhile indoors, Gabrielle just finished recording a version of Willy Nelson's "Take back America" song for posting on Willy's site.
It features Ryan Dricky on twin Fiddles and me on Mandolin. It should be posted soon.
I just got back from a week of overdubbing in Denver for Bill Wright's "Barbwire" CD project. We even added Sitar to a cut! We're just about ready to mix.

We endured/enjoyed a terrific Crested Butte Arts Festival last week. I've been the entertainment director for this event for 14 years now and this is the first time it didn't rain. YO HO HO!
HAPPY SPRING FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY LITTLE GREEN BLADES OF GRASS! This is the best time of the year - warm, long days, surfing mountain slush, T-shirts and debauchery... Lets all share in a collective group exhale - ahhhshush- as we bid the cold farewell and inhale - fffuuuauhh- the glorious rights of Spring.
The String Cheese Incident blew through the Rockies last week with 5 giant sold out shows. I was fortunate to attend 2, and especially lucky to get to Jam at an after-show show in Vail with Drew Emmitt and friends (Billy Nershi, Anthony Hannigan, Scott Law, and Tyler Grant).
The Cheese percussion section ( Travis and Jason Hann) have a new live looping duo, EOTO. I got to see and sit in with them on Paddy's day night in Dillon. Holy Hi-Tech!
Historical footnote: Travis played percussion with me when we lived in Crested Butte in the early 90's. We performed as a duo, and with Voodoo Chili, an electric 4-piece jam band. We later formed an acoustic trio with Sandy Moon called Travis, Hayes, and Moon.
Travis played percussion on everything I recorded in those years- Pack of Dogs, Lunch, and many projects for other folks. I was playing casual bluegrass gigs with Billy Nershi, Michael Kang, and Kieth Moseley around CB at the time in between tours with Melanie and Acoustic Junction. Once when I was out of town they got Travis to fill in and the "Blue String Cheese Accident" was formed.
SCI retuned to CB a year later to cut their first demo in my bedroom studio. Travis and I reunited in the Ragged Mountain Ramblers in 2001 for a show at the Crested Butte Center for the Arts that became the Sold OUT at the Center CD.
One more historical note: Travis first met Jason Hann at the Sierra Fest in '97. Their first impromptu Jam session is captured on the Lunch CD (Cheese Camp Drum Incident).

Telluride Blues and Brews Festival was a gas last weekend. I enjoyed playing in Elk's park at Blues for Breakfast on the coldest morning of the year (so far). I also taught 2 classes at the Acoustic Blues camp called Blues, Boogie, and Lead Guitar or "Ammo 4 Improv". Thanks to Steve Gumble and Mark Galbo for including me once again, and thanks to all the folks who attended my full house evening shows at Big Daddy's and the Side Street Tavern.
Of the acts I was able to catch, best old-timer award goes to Bobby Rush. Best new artist, Eric Bibb!
